Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is a very memorable event to me.
Besides receiving ang pows and reunion dinner and all... I used to like Chinese New Year for another reason.

Years ago I remember dad used to get lots of hampers days before Chinese New Year. There would be trucks delivering hampers with pretty wrappings and ribbons to our house and I would be very excited. Why? Because we get to unwrap them.

It brings me a lot of joy when we sit down together and unwrap the hamper. We would have scissors and cutters to cut through the plastic and cellophane tape. Then we would remove the gifts one by one. There would be the bottle of wine, cans of soft drinks, biscuits/cookies, abalone , ginseng, mushrooms, dried oysters , sugar-coated jellies and etc. I remember 1 year we got a Crabtree and Evelyn gift box. Usually 2/3 of these goodies will be given away to friends and relatives , but I will still be very happy with the remainings.

Hampers have been cut down this few years, though. This year we only got a small one. I am quite dissapointed. But we can't help the fact that the economy is really bad now and people can't afford to spend extra. People might think its just a hamper, but this year there's this something that is missing. The gifts? Yes of course but maybe also the spirit of giving and receiving.

Anyways, HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR everyone!!
